  • Facebook Connect allows internet users to log onto websites, mobile or third party Facebook applications, gaming systems, and even e-commerce checkout procedures using their Facebook profile information. It has almost become a requirement for brands who want to boost traffic and/or connect with their fans on the same playing field. However, more than just a service or luxury for internet users, the introduction of Facebook Connect and other similar social APIs across the web has spawned an entirely unique niche market for products or applications featuring content mined from the social web.

  • In the old model, consumers (consciously or sub-consciously) looked to traditional forms of advertising like television commercials and newspaper or magazine inserts to learn what to buy and where to buy it. In-store display advertising and product placement served to expose the “best selling” products and influence purchasing behavior on-the-spot. • With the passing of anti-cookie legislation on May 25 by the EU and similar anti-online tracking bills heating up in the U.S. Senate, web advertisers, advertising agents, and targeted content providers are shaking in their boots. However, several privacy protection groups including the Federal Trade Commission are initiating an orchestrated attack against this web protocol claiming it as an invasion of privacy rights. So, while cookies are often portrayed in the media as scary and big brother, what many consumers don’t know is that the passing of this legislation will yield two very important consequences: from now on one’s web browsing experience will be characterized by incessant pop ups and extra steps from pages forced to request permission for cookies, and sub-standard web content that will lose all elements of customization.

  • With an IPO imminent in the next couple of weeks, everyone is buzzing about Zynga, the social online gaming giant. It is clear that it should stay focused on its core competencies and resources and continue leveraging them toward its success. A shift toward a cloud approach and a focus on mobility may be where Zynga can develop a competitive edge to remain “in the game” and growing at a rapid pace.

  • The “cable industry” is in essence no longer a standalone industry. In fact, companies like Time Warner and Comcast sit at the intersection of Internet, Telecommunications, Media, Gaming, and Film merging to become a new digital “macro” industry. Today, TechCrunch TV’s Andrew Keen challenged Time Warner’s Chief Strategy Officer (awesome title btw), Peter Stern, to defend why cable TV does in fact have a foreseeable future. His definitive answer: yes. Do you agree? Let’s investigate further.

  • As long as there are still Baby Boomers, there will still be Google. But what happens once traditional media enthusiasts die off (no offense intended toward our beloved parents of course) and Google’s pool of gullible eyeballs diminishes? Translation – Google is currently the largest advertising agency in the world, whose revenue model is chiefly based on pay per click advertising. Thus, in order to make money, Google must prove to advertisers that people still look at and click on their ads. In the current and near horizon, Google has nothing to fear, but I can’t help but wonder if it will experience a paradigm shift as digital natives take the helm.
